COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES

Comparatives and Superlatives are special forms of adjectives. They are used to compare two or more things. Generally, comparatives are formed using -er and superlatives are formed using -est.

Forming regular comparatives and superlatives

    How these forms are created depends on how many syllables there are in the adjective. Syllables are like "sound beats". For instance, "sing" contains one syllable, but "singing" contains two -- sing and ing. Here are the rules:

Adjective form Comparative Superlative
Only one syllable, ending in E. Examples:
wide, fine, cute
Add -R:
wider, finer, cuter
Add -ST:
widest, finest, cutest
Only one syllable, with one vowel and one consonant at the end. Examples:
hot, big, fat
Double the consonant, and add -ER:
hotter, bigger, fatter
Double the consonant, and add -EST:
hottest, biggest, fattest
Only one syllable, with more than one vowel or more than one consonant at the end. Examples:
light, neat, fast
Add -ER:
lighter, neater, faster
Add -EST:
lightest, neatest, fastest
Two syllables, ending in Y. Examples:
happy, silly, lonely
Change Y to I, then add -ER:
happier, sillier, lonelier
Change Y to I, then add -EST:
happiest, silliest, loneliest
Two syllables or more, not ending in Y. Examples:
modern, interesting, beautiful
Use MORE before the adjective:
more modern, more interesting, more beautiful
Use MOST before the adjective:
most modern, most interesting, most beautiful

British and American English

This activity is designed to be used when teaching or practising the difference between British and American English vocabulary. The two passages are the same but the vocabulary is different depending on where the speaker is from. This activity could be exploited in a number of ways.

Procedure 1

  • Give out the worksheets and ask learners to complete the gaps with appropriate vocabulary.
  • Sts listen to the teacher to check.

Procedure 2

  • Put the clues/definitions on the walls around the room. To make this easier you could also add the words to walls and use it as a matching activity.
  • Learners walk around and complete worksheet 2 with two words in American and British English.
  • Give out the gapped text.
  • Learners complete the text with the appropriate word.
  • Teacher reads, learners listen and check.

Procedure 3

  • Teacher reads the gapped text and elicits answers from the learners.

TEN TIPS

So you recently started learning a foreign language or you would like to learn one but you are stuck in a rut or you are frustrated because you don’t seem to be going anywhere fast. Here are 10 tips to help you along the way and to make it easier for you to get a quick start.

1. Get some Disney or other movies, which you have already seen and watch them in the language, or with subtitles. If you are learning French or Spanish this will be easy since most DVD’s have subtitles and voice overs in these languages. However, if you have chosen a different language you will need to do some searching and possibly purchase an international DVD player which allows you to play DVD’s in Pal format. Another alternative is to seek out movie theaters in your city, which play foreign films, or to rent foreign DVD’s. Most larger cities have at least one theater, which plays foreign films on a regular basis.

2. Go to the library. Look for easy reader books in the language and begin reading. Some larger libraries also have foreign language easy reading books or Disney books in foreign languages. Begin reading and you will be surprised at how much of it you will understand.

3. Get some children’s music in the foreign language. It will be easy to sing along and it will help you to internalize the language. Just like reading you will understand more than you realize.

4. Do an Internet search. The Internet has an abundance of foreign language learning sites. Focus specifically on those, which offer basic explanations of grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary.

5. Try to find a pen pal with whom you can communicate in the language via email. To get in touch with someone, try posting to the forums for the about.com site for the language you are learning.

6. Try reading the news or magazines online. Although they are obviously more advanced. You can go through and write down all of the words you understand and using the pictures, you will surprise yourself at how much you will understand.

7. Take advantage of AltaVista’s Babel fish translation feature. Although the translations are not perfect, it is a fun tool. Use it to translate one of your favorite sites and then read the translation to find patterns in the language.

8. If you are lucky enough to know someone who already speaks the language, practice with him or her. Don’t be embarrassed by your lack of knowledge. Chances are the person will be happy to help you.

9. Take advantage of online language learning forums. Use them to post your questions. Write down sentences then post them and ask for help in correcting them.

10. Practice speaking with your dog. This may seem weird, but it is perfect because dogs can’t tell the difference and it gives you a chance to voice your language out loud without embarrassment.

CUCUTA CIUDAD BILINGUE

 

         El proyecto busca diseñar una estrategia de trabajo a corto, mediano y largo plazo, concertada entre distintos estamentos públicos y privados para lograr en siete años, tener ciudadanos y ciudadanas preparados para comunicarse y desenvolverse en español y otro idioma, el bilingüismo encierra la posibilidad de contar con ciudadanos competentes en el manejo de cualquier lengua, adicional a la propia.  

         Se espera con esto contribuir a lograr una ciudad región competitiva, de tal forma que se inserte a Cúcuta y su área metropolitana en los procesos de comunicación universal, en la economía global y la apertura cultural

 

           OBJETIVOS

 

         Tener ciudadanos y ciudadanas capaces de comunicarse en inglés, de tal forma que se inserte a Cúcuta y su área metropolitana en los procesos de comunicación universal, en la economía global y la apertura cultural. Se espera con esto contribuir a lograr una ciudad región competitiva

 

PLAN NACIONAL DE BILINGUISMO MINISTERIO

MINISTERIO DE EDUCACION NACIONAL:

• Fija metas de dominio del idioma

• Formula Estándares Básicos de Competencias para Básica y  Media

• Establece pautas para la política de mejoramiento (en desarrollo)

• Identifica áreas de investigación y desarrollo

• Recoge y analiza información sobre desempeño de los  docentes para la formulación de pruebas

• Recoge y analiza información sobre el desempeño de los estudiantes para el ajuste de pruebas nacionales
